Mathias Gronberg’s first look at Woodmore Country Club was for a bachelor party.

Eleven years later, when Gronberg returned to Woodmore, he had another reason to celebrate. Firing an immaculate 19-under par, Gronberg won his first tournament in six years, the Melwood Prince George’s County Open.
Shooting 68-69-67-65 – 269, Gronberg ran away from the field in the final round, turning the bunched leaderboard into a rout. On a day he played 36 holes after Friday’s rainout, Gronberg rolled to a six-stroke victory over Robert Damron and Justin Bolli, matching the largest victory margin on the Nationwide Tour this year.
“It was a pleasure to play golf today,” said Gronberg. “Coming out there and playing [12]-under with no bogeys, I was very, very happy with it.”
Playing 36 holes Sunday after playing 25 on Saturday was no problem for Gronberg. He says he could recall playing 72 holes on long summer days in his native Sweden.
“Crazy Swedish golf,” said Gronberg, who was limited early this season by an injured left foot.
After playing 147 PGA Tour events in the last six years, the Nationwide Tour is a step down for Gronberg, 39, evidenced by his winner’s check of $121,500, which is $3,450 less than he made for finishing 11th in the Valero Texas Open three weeks ago.
Gronberg started the day five shots behind second-round leader Cameron Percy. But after firing a 67 Sunday morning, he was tied with countryman Oskar Bergman for the lead. By the time he hit the back nine in the final round, he had opened a five-stroke bulge.
Gronberg was a sizzling 11-under during a 23-hole stretch in the middle of the two rounds. The run started with an eagle 3 at No. 8.
It was even more fun than his first experience at Woodmore, a party for a friend from Annapolis, though Gronberg wasn’t sure what the ritual is called in America.
“What do you call it, grooms golf?” asked Gronberg. “Someone was getting married. Bachelor party, that’s the one.”
Gronberg didn’t have much chance to celebrate. He had to drive Sunday night to Westchester, N.Y. to play in a 36-hole U.S. Open qualifier.
