D.C. United announced today that goalkeeper Bill Hamid is headed to Birmingham, Ala., where his right shoulder will be operated on by Dr. James Andrews on Wednesday, thus ending his season.
Hamid, who started eight MLS matches this season, has been battling a sore shoulder all season. United team president Kevin Payne told season-ticket holders two weeks ago that the club was considering shutting down the 19-year-old even as he started against Columbus. Hamid, of course, made the gaffe that led to the only goal in the 1-0 loss to the Crew.
D.C. midfielder Clyde Simms also continues to be evaluated for a possible re-aggravation of a sports hernia that sidelined him last year.
