    A rhesus macaque monkey walks past a supply shack used by scientists on Cayo Santiago, known as Monkey Island off the eastern coast of Puerto Rico. The 37-acre island has served since 1938 as a research colony where the monkeys, originally from India, are studied. Because the species is important for the testing of AIDS vaccines, the Cayo Santiago colony serves as a source of subjects for AIDS experiments in top U.S. laboratories.
