As the fight against IS in Syria grinds on, Iraqi troops stationed in western Iraq near the border continue to call on coalition forces for help sharing intelligence and launching strikes. Thousands of U.S. troops and billions of dollars spent by Washington helped bring down the Islamic State group in Iraq, but many of the divisions and problems that helped fuel the extremists’ rise remain.
