Access is a huge part of what companies pay for when they hire lobbyists — a seat at the table. It is the coin of the realm in the swamp. So, it's certainly unseemly for a president to literally sell access to himself, as President Trump does with his private clubs like Mar-a-Lago (pictured above). And for some customers, it appears that the rewards have been real. (AP Photo/Carolyn Kaster)

Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch was a fairly conservative senator, but he was always close to K Street and big business, and the lobbyists' pleadings often, though not always, defeated his conservatism. (AP Photo/Rick Bowmer)

In this 2013 photo, demonstrators gather outside the U.S. Supreme Court as the court heard arguments on campaign finance. To advocates of campaign finance restrictions like former Sen. Russ Feingold, using money to express political views makes politics more corrupt and extreme. But more regulation is a surefire way to get less speech - just not from the rich and powerful. The Senate tax reform bill closes the loophole that allows foreign insurers to avoid paying American taxes on life insurance policies sold to American consumers in American markets. The House version keeps it open. And now it waits on the chopping block. If it survives, it may be due to the efforts of one senior staffer, Barbara Angus (pictured above). She certainly knows all the decision makers.
