In this file picture provided by the Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano on Dec. 23, 2013, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, left, welcomes Pope Francis as they exchanged Christmas greetings, at the Vatican. It was a holiday at the Vatican and Pope Benedict XVI was speaking in Latin at an arguably boring ceremony announcing new saints, so few people were paying much attention. But what Benedict said a year ago Tuesday changed the course of the 2,000-year-old Catholic Church and paved the way for the historic papacy of Pope Francis. In his soft voice and in a Latin that the cardinals present strained to understand, Benedict announced that he no longer had the

FILE - In this Monday, June 10, 2013 file photo, Ernst von Freyberg, president of the Vatican Bank I.O.R. (Istituto per le Opere Religiose), talks with the Associated Press during an interview at his office in Vatican City. The Vatican bank's much-publicized financial reform has hit a small glitch: The bank told dozens and perhaps hundreds of widows and Vatican pensioners that they had to close their accounts or risk losing access to their money as part of Pope Francis' reform efforts. Only the bank now says these account-holders were targeted as a result of a

An undated photo of Monsignor Nunzio Scarano in Salerno, Italy. A Vatican monsignor already on trial for allegedly plotting to smuggle 20 million euros ($26 million) from Switzerland to Italy was ordered arrested in a separate case on Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2014 for allegedly using his Vatican bank accounts to launder money. The financial police in the southern city of Salerno said Monsignor Nunzio Scarano's Vatican bank accounts had been used to transfer millions of euros (dollars) in fictitious donations from offshore companies. Police said millions in euros had been seized and that other arrest warrants were issued. Scarano's lawyer, Silverio Sica, said his client merely took donations from people he thought were acting in good faith to fund a home for the terminally ill. He conceded that the money ended up being used to pay off Scarano's mortgage, however. (AP Photo/Francesco Pecoraro)
