President Trump poked fun at South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg over his height and his last name during a campaign rally in Battle Creek, Michigan.
While Democrats were impeaching him in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday night, Trump was delivering an hour-and-a-half-long campaign speech in which he zeroed in on Buttigieg after criticizing Democrats for their “dying” debates.
“Who wants to watch Buttigieg?” Trump asked. “Boot-edge-edge. Boot-edge-edge! You know that you pronounce it, they say, I heard some guy say, ‘No, no.’ Because it’s an unpronounceable name, that’s why they call him Mayor Pete.”
He then joked about Buttigieg’s slight stature by holding a hand to the middle of his chest, saying, “I’ve had you up to here, Mayor Pete.”
Trump continued to mock his name, telling the crowd, “I saw them pronouncing Buttigieg. They said, ‘Here’s what you do: boot-edge-edge. Say edge, like the edge of a building.’ Edge-edge. Boot-edge-edge.”
He also returned to his joke that Buttigieg, 37, looks like Alfred E. Newman from the magazine Mad, adding, “You’ve got to be older to know what that means.”
Trump additionally hit 2020 candidate Elizabeth Warren, calling her Pocahontas in reference to her controversial claims to having Native American heritage.
“I’m not going to say bad things about him. You know why? I’d love him to win. I thought I knocked off Pocahontas; I did it a year too early. A year too early. I give her credit. She then started to come back. I don’t think she’s going to make it, though. She’s gasping. She’s gasping for air,” Trump said.
Trump didn’t hold back against Buttigieg or Warren, but his most controversial remark of the rally was when he claimed that Michigan Rep. Debbie Dingell’s late husband John Dingell might be “looking up” at her from hell.
