State of the Union 2023: Romney says ‘sick puppy’ Santos should have sat back and stayed quiet

Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) called embattled Rep. George Santos (R-NY) a “sick puppy” and said he doesn’t belong in Congress following a tense exchange minutes before the State of the Union.

Romney and Santos had a quick conversation as the senator walked into the House chamber, prompting speculation over the words exchanged between the two lawmakers.

Santos has admitted to fabricating aspects of his resume and personal background and is facing calls from colleagues and constituents to resign.

“Given the fact that he’s under an ethics investigation, he should be sitting in the back row and staying quiet, instead of parading in front of the president and people coming into the room,” Romney told reporters after the speech. “They’re gonna go through the process and hopefully get him out. But he shouldn’t be there, and if he had any shame at all, he wouldn’t be there.”

Romney, who ran for president in 2012, said he did not hear if Santos responded to being told he shouldn’t be there and added that he’s disappointed House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) is not pressuring Santos to resign.

All of Santos’s fellow freshmen New York Republicans have said he should resign. His alleged fabrications include his education history, that he is descended from Holocaust survivors, and that his mother was in the Twin Towers on 9/11.

If he resigned, the House GOP would be left with an even slimmer majority than it currently has.
