Lizzo makes history playing James Madison’s 200-year-old flute

It’s not Lizzo’s fault she’s out here making news. Emmy-winning singer Lizzo claims to have made history playing a crystal flute gifted to James Madison in the 1800s.

The “Good As Hell” singer performed at the Capitol One Arena in Washington, D.C., for her “You’re Special” tour. Earlier in the day, she received an invitation to go to the Library of Congress to see its collection of historic flutes.

Lizzo is a proficient flute player and plays the instrument during her concerts and in her chart-topping songs. The singer is known for her body positivity and female empowerment messaging in her lyrics.

For those worried about damage to the flute, the Library of Congress sent out a tweet hoping to ease those concerns, saying most instruments are donated with the intention that “they remain functional and be played.”

Following the concert, Lizzo posted on Twitter a thank you to the Library of Congress for allowing her to play the 200-year-old crystal flute for her fans, saying, “NOBODY HAS EVER HEARD THIS FAMOUS CRYSTAL FLUTE BEFORE.”

Despite her claims at making history, it wasn’t actually the first time the flute has been played in public. There was a celebration at the Library of Congress in 2001 where the flute was played to hundreds of people. However, Lizzo did 100% make history, as she is the first and only person to play the flute – while twerking.

And her fans loved it.
