A summer of hope for freedom from the COVID-19 virus has turned into a fall of despair, as the delta variant has turbocharged once-declining infection rates and hospitalizations. The economic and psychological costs of the virus’s resurgence are difficult to predict, but the political fallout is already taking a toll, with much finger-pointing over the government’s mixed messaging and a sizable portion of the population choosing to defy vaccination recommendations.
