Time is running out for World War II veterans. According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, hundreds of WWII vets die each day.
The Honor Flight Network was founded in 2007 to provide free travel for WWII veterans to visit their memorial in our nation’s capital. By 2017, there were 140 Honor Flight regional hubs across the United States.
Upon arrival, the veterans receive a hero’s welcome for their service to our country.
Frank Manchel, a WWII Army technical sergeant, died on the return flight to San Diego from his recent Honor Flight visit to Washington, DC. His son, Dr. Bruce Manchel, said, “My father’s passing was the ending to the most amazing weekend, surrounded by his newest best friends.”
Following the WWII veterans, the Honor Flight Network will focus on the Korean War and the Vietnam War veterans.
