President Trump speculated a winner of November’s presidential election may not be declared until 2021.
In an interview with Axios reporter Jonathan Swan that aired Monday night, the president spoke about the potential for election fraud and warned that the country may not know whether he’ll serve another term until “2 months” after Election Day.
“You know, you could have a case where this election won’t be decided on the evening of Nov. 3. This election could be decided 2 months later,” Trump said.
He added that voting by mail is problematic because “lots of things will happen during that period of time. Especially when you have tight margins. Lots of things can happen. There’s never been anything like this.”
Trump said this less than 100 days out from the election. He trails former Vice President Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic nominee, in the RealClearPolitics general election poll tracker.
The president has repeatedly warned about the potential fraud involved with widespread mail-in voting over the last couple of months as more states have decided to go this route in an effort to avoid long lines and big gatherings amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Days after the interview was taped last week, Trump floated the idea of delaying the election until “people can properly, securely and safely vote,” but it was widely rejected by politicians on both sides of the aisle.
Nevada’s state legislature passed a bill over the weekend that, once signed by the Democratic governor, adds Nevada to a list of a handful of other states that have approved plans to send voters their ballots automatically during the health crisis.
