A majority of Americans revealed that they support House Democrats’ impeachment inquiry into President Trump, according to a new Washington Post-Schar School poll.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi officially announced the impeachment inquiry two weeks ago. It began after a CIA officer filed a whistleblower complaint alleging Trump made an inappropriate request to a foreign leader. It was revealed that Trump requested Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter.
The poll, which was conducted from Oct. 1-6 and released on Tuesday morning, revealed that 58% of the 1,007 people surveyed support the inquiry. Of the 58%, 43% of them “strongly” agree with the decision. Further, of the 58% of respondents that support the inquiry, 49% support Trump’s removal from office while only 6% back the investigation but not the president’s removal.
Comparatively, only 38% believe House Democrats were wrong to begin the investigation, while 4% have no opinion either way.
Previous Post-Schar School or Post-ABC News polls from July, April, March, and January of 2019 all showed that a majority of those respondents did not believe that Congress should “begin impeachment proceedings.”
The poll has a margin of error of 3.5%.
