President Trump is not bothered by critics accusing him of being racist after his tweets aimed at Rep. Elijah Cummings and the poor conditions in his Baltimore district drew backlash.
Trump’s multiple tweets about “rat and rodent infested” Baltimore sparked another news cycle of Democrats and media figures calling him a racist. During a Wednesday interview with C-SPAN, Trump claimed everyone is called a racist, for the most part, over nothing.
“Well, I think the word has really gone down a long way because everybody’s called a racist now,” Trump said. “Her own party called Nancy Pelosi a racist two weeks ago. The word is so overused, it’s such a disgrace. And I can tell you I’m the least racist person there is in the world as far as I’m concerned.”
Trump said Democrats use “racist” when they “run out of things to criticize,” but he conceded that “in some cases, it’s true there are people that are racists, bad people.”
“But with me, they have a hard time getting away with it, and they don’t get away with it,” he added.
The president also pointed to his actions on criminal justice reform and helping provide economic opportunities to impoverished areas as example of helping minorities.
