‘We need Joe’: JFK daughter endorses Biden 2020 bid

Former President John F. Kennedy’s daughter has endorsed former Vice President Joe Biden for president.

Caroline Kennedy, who was previously the U.S. ambassador to Japan, announced her 2020 pick for president in an op-ed published by the Boston Globe on Tuesday. Kennedy’s endorsement may give the Biden campaign a boost heading into the New Hampshire primary on Feb. 11.

“America’s place in the world and the society our children inherit will be determined by the character of the leader we choose,” Kennedy wrote. “We need a president who can bring people together, who knows how to get things done at home and abroad, whose word we can count on, and who can nurture the next generation of leaders. We need Joe Biden.”

Former President Barack Obama appointed Kennedy, 62, as ambassador to Japan in 2013, and she served in the post until 2017. She joined her uncle, the late Sen. Ted Kennedy, in endorsing Obama’s presidential bid in 2008.

The Democratic presidential primary race was thrown into chaos late Monday after the Iowa Democratic Party announced it would delay releasing the results of the first-in-the-nation caucus. Democratic officials said the decision was made to ensure “quality control” of the results.

In lieu of the election results, Democratic candidates for the presidency resorted to giving adapted stump speeches after the primary contest ended. Many of the candidates claimed a measure of victory in the state after the announcement that the official results would be delayed.
