The Vine Guy: Va. wines are closer than you think

The idea for this column began as many of my columns do; with the confluence of two ideas that happen to intersect at exactly the right time. As my deadline approached for my participation in this year's second annual Drink Local Wine event, I began to panic that I was not going to find a suitable theme. While I admit that I am somewhat blessed to have both Maryland and Virginia wineries close at hand, I wasn't quite sure which local wine to write about. That's when my phone rang -- or rather buzzed.
It was from a friend of mine -- let's call him Steve -- who owns a sedan service. Normally, I am calling Steve to shuttle me to and from tastings, so it was a bit odd to see his number pop up on the caller ID. It turns out that he was asked to chauffeur a group of out-of-town wine lovers who wanted to check out the "local" scene, and he was calling me to get my opinion. It turns out that he was just about to hit the Google button when he caught the tail end of my "Wine of the Week" spot on WTOP radio and thought he'd enlist my services. Timing is everything. I now not only had a chance to help out a friend, I also had my topic; wines of close-in Virginia.
