House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Attorney General William Barr acted like a “blob” and a “henchman” of President Trump during his testimony before the House Judiciary Committee.
Pelosi, a California Democrat, denied her own comments could lead to violent consequences when she was asked Tuesday evening to respond to Barr saying it was possible that her comparison of federal law enforcement to “storm troopers,” an allusion to Nazi paramilitary forces, could place officers in danger.
“I never heard him say anything about Rudy Giuliani when he said they were like storm troopers when they went into Michael Cohen, was it his home, or one of his other henchmen said that the law enforcement were like the Gestapo when they went into one of the other of the president’s henchmen’s place. I said they acted like storm troopers, and they did. And my colleagues have said that as well,” Pelosi told MSNBC.
“He should be answering for what he did at Lafayette Square, a disgrace,” Pelosi later added. “So this — it’s really — he was like a blob. He was like just a henchman for the president of the United States instead of the attorney general of the United States of America.”
Pelosi said Barr’s testimony was “despicable” and “beneath the dignity of an attorney general.” The speaker also suggested that Barr’s behavior was criminal.
“He is there to support the president, Donald Trump, no matter what. He’s not the president’s lawyer. That was Michael Cohen, and you know what happened to him,” Pelosi said.
