Biden South Carolina win lures big-money donors

Joe Biden’s campaign secured a flood of commitments from big-money donors after his blowout win in South Carolina’s primary on Saturday.

The new pledges came as he racked up big-name endorsements from establishment Democrats rallying around his campaign in an effort to slow Sen. Bernie Sanders from winning the nomination.

Bundlers backing the former vice president’s campaign told CNBC that there’s been an increase in commitments since Biden won South Carolina.

Biden’s bundlers have secured commitments from wealthy donors who had been backing Sen. Amy Klobuchar and former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg, sources said. The win has also convinced uncommitted donors to support Biden, they said.

The donors are willing to give the maximum amount of $2,800 to Biden’s campaign, which has struggled with fundraising after his lackluster performances in the first three voting contests.

“Money has been pouring in. And now, it will really pour. Voters now understand that a vote for anyone other than Biden is a vote for Bernie Sanders,” Florida-based businessman John Morgan, a Biden bundler, told CNBC. “I have been inundated with emails today.”

Rufus Gifford, who spearheaded President Barack Obama’s fundraising operation, said he’s been asking uncommitted donors to give to Biden’s campaign.

“Tonight, I have heard from many friends who have been supporting other candidates and now want to do everything they can to nominate Joe Biden,” he said.

Less than an hour after Biden’s victory, his director of online fundraising, Elana Firsht, said it was the best hour of fundraising the campaign had since Biden launched his candidacy.
