Mitch McConnell takes Twitter victory lap over Neil Gorsuch after Supreme Court upholds travel ban

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., took a victory lap over the confirmation of Justice Neil Gorsuch on Tuesday after the Supreme Court upheld President Trump’s travel ban in a 5-4 ruling.

McConnell’s political team posted a picture of McConnell about to shake hands with Gorsuch soon after the court handed down the ruling, which said that Trump’s travel ban was “squarely within” presidential powers.

McConnell has said repeatedly over the past year that his decision to keep the seat open after Justice Antonin Scalia died in February 2016 and rejecting former President Barack Obama’s nominee for the post, Merrick Garland, was his top accomplishment.

Gorsuch was confirmed last April to the bench after McConnell invoked the nuclear option for Supreme Court nominees, requiring only 51 votes from the Senate to be seated rather than 60 votes.
