Russia asks Trump to help restore suspended embassy account

Russia’s official Ministry of Foreign Affairs Twitter account reached out to President Trump and asked him to help get Twitter to unblock the account for the Russian embassy in Syria.

The embassy’s account was suspended for violating “Twitter rules” after denying news about an airstrike that reportedly killed a number of civilians in the rebel-held Syrian city of Idlib. In response, Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs account asked Trump to speak out against the decision through the social media outlet.

“@realDonaldTrump Dear Mr. President, beautiful #US company @Twitter blocked our no less beautiful account @RusEmbSyria. Please say something as beautiful as you said on the digital tax that #France imposed on ‘great American technology companies,’” the account tweeted, apparently referring to Trump calling out and threatening French President Emmanuel Macron over Twitter for his approval of new taxes on tech giants.

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs account had previously tweeted out an image of the suspended account and accused Twitter of censorship.

“The official account of the #Russian #Embassy in #Syria was blocked by @Twitter yesterday without any explanation. We consider it as act of #censorship & flagrant #violation of the #FreedomOfSpeech committed by the social media administration,” the account tweeted.

After the outrage from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs account, it appeared that Twitter ended up restoring the suspended embassy account Wednesday.
