President Trump on Monday issued a disaster declaration for the state of South Carolina, and ordered federal aid to be directed to the state for recovery efforts in areas that were hit by tropical storm Florence.
Trump approved the disaster declaration on Sunday for federal funding to be distributed to the state and local governments, as well as some private nonprofit organizations for emergency protective measures.
Areas in North and South Carolina are continuously being assessed for damage.
Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator Brock Long named Elizabeth Turner as federal coordinating officer for recovery operations in areas affected by the storm, which was previously a category four hurricane and was demoted over the weekend to a tropical storm.
Reports emerged last week that Trump was considering replacing Long over the possibility that taxpayers inappropriately paid for his travel. However, over the weekend he tweeted a quote from Long complimenting the president on his support of FEMA.
