President Trump fired back at CNN’s Jim Acosta after the reporter accused him of lying.
During an afternoon news conference in India on Tuesday, Acosta asked the president if he would pledge not to accept foreign assistance in the 2020 elections, to which the president said, “I want no help from any country.”
“I haven’t been given help from any country. And if you see what CNN, your wonderful network, said, I guess they apologized in a way for — didn’t they apologize for the fact that they said certain things that weren’t true?” the president inquired of Acosta, referring to CNN’s coverage of Russian interference in the 2016 election.
“Mr. President, I think our record on delivering the truth is a lot better than yours sometimes, if you don’t mind me saying,” Acosta said to Trump, who fired back at the anchor’s history of reporting.
“Your record is so bad, you ought to be ashamed of yourself. You probably have the worst record in the history of broadcasting,” Trump said.
Trump and the CNN anchor have a history of engaging in heated debates.
After the 2018 midterm elections, Trump addressed a room of reporters at the White House to discuss the election results, and Acosta pressed for more than one question.
“CNN should be ashamed of itself having you working for them. You are a rude, terrible person,” Trump told Acosta, who repeatedly interrupted the president. “The way you treat [then-White House press secretary] Sarah Huckabee is horrible, and the way you treat other people is horrible. You shouldn’t treat people that way.”
