Ivanka Trump faces backlash, accused of violating ethics law for Goya beans tweet

After tweeting a photo of herself with a can of Goya beans, White House adviser and first daughter Ivanka Trump has been the latest subject of scorn by critics of the Trump administration.

Trump, who tweeted the selfie on Tuesday night, added, “if it’s Goya, it has to be good” in both English and Spanish.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the anti-Trump Republican-led Lincoln Project, and the Democratic Coalition were among those who hit back at Trump after the photo.

Critics, including some in the media, also accused Trump of violating the federal ethics law, which bars employees from using their platform in public office to endorse a private product.

“Senior advisor to the President endorsing a product — using the company’s own advertising line,” tweeted Chris Jansing of MSNBC. “Ethics rules do not allow it — and pretty much unimaginable in previous administrations.”

Anna Massoglia of OpenSecrets added that the tweet could raise ethical issues related to the law.

“White House advisor Ivanka Trump promoting Goya seems like it could raise potential ethics issues since executive branch employees other than the president are prohibited from using public office ‘for the endorsement of any product, service or enterprise,” she said.

Trump’s tweet comes days after Goya CEO Robert Unanue faced controversy after praising Ivanka’s father, President Trump, at a recent event at the White House.

Unanue’s support sparked calls to boycott Goya, which considers itself the largest Hispanic-owned food company in the country. The CEO has defended his support, refusing to apologize and calling the #BoycottGoya campaign circulating on social media an attempt to suppress speech.

A number of other Twitter users pointed to the Trump administration’s hard-line immigration policies, which critics say hurt Latino communities, in response to Unanue’s comments and Ivanka Trump’s tweet.
