South Carolina kingmaker Rep. Jim Clyburn called on Michael Bloomberg and Sen. Elizabeth Warren to reconsider their presidential aspirations following their disappointing Super Tuesday performances.
The former mayor of New York City failed to win any state that voted on Super Tuesday, albeit while taking home a victory in American Samoa. Meanwhile, the senator from Massachusetts did not win — or come in second — in her home state.
Clyburn, whose endorsement of former Vice President Joe Biden helped boost him in South Carolina over the weekend and carried him through an unexpectedly strong Super Tuesday performance, offered his thoughts on what the remaining candidates should do during a Wednesday morning interview on CNN.
“Let me congratulate — I guess — Mayor Bloomberg is demonstrating once again what a class guy he is,” he said. “I’ve heard this morning that he’s going to do some reassessments. And I hope he will really coalesce around Joe Biden like the rest of us will and have a tremendous victory in November.”
The Democratic congressman said he’d “suggest that we all coalesce around Joe Biden” but added that he has “no idea” what the former mayor will do moving forward. Clyburn was then asked if he thought Warren should end her campaign, to which he noted her third-place finish in Massachusetts and said, “I would reassess if I were her.”
Despite his endorsement, which has spurred Biden’s resurgence, Clyburn has already made it known to the former vice president’s campaign that they’ll need to make changes in order to secure the party’s nomination.
