Cruz, Biden celebrate Baylor’s victory in the Big Dance

Baylor University bested Gonzaga University in Monday’s National Collegiate Athletic Association championship, and political leaders from President Joe Biden to Texas Sen. Ted Cruz celebrated the win.

The Bears beat the Gonzaga Bulldogs 86-70, stopping Gonzaga from making history as the first team to become undefeated champions since the 1975-76 Indiana Hoosiers.

Baylor’s win was praised by a number of prominent voices, including some in the school’s congressional delegation.

“National champions,” Cruz wrote on Twitter.

“Congrats to the Baylor Bears on their National Championship — and to the Gonzaga Bulldogs on a great season,” Biden tweeted. “After an unimaginable year, every team in the tournament proved what’s possible with hard work and determination. You made your schools, communities, and country proud.”

Republican Rep. Pete Sessions, who serves Texas’s 17th Congressional District in which Baylor is located, quoted a former Dallas Cowboys quarterback, saying, “As Don Meredith would say…turn out the lights the party is OVER.”

Former Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III posted a photo with Chip Gaines, co-host of HGTV’s Fixer Upper and owner of Magnolia Market in Waco, saying, “This man @chipgaines is the best. We do demo days together and we watched Baylor win a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP together. Thank you brother for the hospitality, letting me change a diaper in your suite and my kids throw popcorn all over the floor.”

Skip Bayless of FS1’s Undisputed wrote, “Gonzaga just got out-muscled and out-hustled, out-willed and out-skilled, out-passed and out-shot, by a better and deeper basketball team that hasn’t gotten enough credit because it doesn’t have one big star. Congrats, Baylor.”
