President Obama continues to oppose the Keystone XL pipeline over concerns for national security and American sovereignty, his spokesman indicated while scolding Congress for irresponsibility on those issues.
“It would be preemptively sacrificing American sovereignty” to approve the pipeline, White Hosue Press Secretary Jay Carney said, because a route for the northern portion of the pipeline has not been established.

“The United States Congress — a very important body, takes American security and sovereignty very seriously, or should — is saying that we will, in advance — blind — approve a proposal for a pipeline, a proposal for which does not exist,” he also said.
The Keystone XL pipeline has undergone 3 years of review, but the State Department refused to grant a permitafter pressure from environmentalists required the route through Nebraska to be changed.
Bipartisan consensus in Congress is bringing the pipeline back into the news. “The latest action happened Wednesday, when the House passed a measure to move the pipeline forward,” The Washington Examiner’s Byron York explained today. “Before the vote, Obama issued a veto threat. The House approved the pipeline anyway — by a veto-proof majority, 293 to 127. Sixty-nine Democrats abandoned the president to vote with Republicans. That’s a lot of defections.”
