Georgia state Rep. Jason Spencer announced late Tuesday evening that he would resign from office following his disastrous appearance on comedian Sacha Baron Cohen’s television program, “Who Is America?”
“This email/letter is to serve as an official resignation notice to your office that I will be resigning my post effective July 31, 2018,” Spencer said in an email addressed to House Speaker David Ralston, who, along with Republican Gov. Nathan Deal, had called for the disgraced Republican representative to step down.
Good riddance to bad rubbish. The only question left is: What took so long?
Showtime aired footage Sunday evening of Spencer partaking in so-called anti-terror self-defense classes with Cohen, who posed as an Israeli “anti-terror expert” named “Captain Erran Morad.”
The moment they aired images of Spencer running backwards with his pants around his ankles while screaming at an “Islamic terrorist,” “I’ll touch you! I’ll make you a homosexual! Drop that gun! U.S.A! U.S.A!” the Georgia state representative’s resignation should’ve been in Speaker Ralston’s hand.
But I guess anyone stupid enough to think he was learning real self-defense techniques from Captain Erran Morad is also stupid enough to think he can hold onto public office afterwards.
In fact, on Monday, Spencer even played the victim card, claiming he was unfairly and unethically tricked into acting like a racist idiot.
“It is clear the makers of this film intended to deceive me in an attempt to undermine the American conservative political movement; therefore, I have sought legal counsel to challenge this illegal and unethical behavior and plan on taking action if and when any of this fraudulently obtained footage of me is used by these Hollywood liberals to line their own pockets,” Spencer said in a statement to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
It added, “They exploited my state of mind for profit and notoriety. This media company’s deceptive and fraudulent behavior is exactly why President Donald Trump was elected.”
In a second statement Monday to the Washington Post, Spencer reiterated he planned to stay in office for the duration of his fourth term, though you could see the cracks forming in his defense. He told the Post he “deeply” regretted the language he used, and he apologized to his “family, friends and the people of my district for this ridiculously ugly episode.”
Just to be clear, the “training” that Spencer partook in so enthusiastically involved him: Screaming the n-word so as to dissuade would-be kidnappers; pretending to be a “Chinese tourist” and sticking a selfie stick up a Muslim actor’s robe to check for a concealed firearm, and dropping his pants so as to “intimidate” Islamic terrorists with his buttocks.
The outgoing state representative also partook in a post-credits video, titled “A Message to Terrorists from Rep. Jason Spencer,” in which he brandished a knife, and said the following: “All you damn sand-n—-rs over in the Middle East, we are tired of you coming to America and we are tired of you trying to threaten us.”
“We will cut off your dick, you understand? We will take your dick and we will shove it in your mouth. How are you going to rape children and women without a dick?” he added.
Spencer’s official resignation on July 31 can’t come fast enough.
