Top Gun: Maverick soars to new record-setting heights for streaming

Top Gun: Maverick set another record as the most-watched film to debut on Paramount+.

The Top Gun sequel surpassed the previous record-holder by 60% in its first weekend on the streaming platform.

Prior to Top Gun: Maverick becoming available for streaming on Paramount+ on Dec. 22, 2020’s Sonic the Hedgehog held the premiere weekend viewership record, according to Deadline.

Tom Cruise said he spent the 36 years between the original film’s release in 1986 and its 2022 sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, contemplating how to make the breadth of the film “more expansive.”

“The runaway success of this film across theatrical, digital, and now in streaming is an undeniable proof point demonstrating the power of Paramount’s multi-platform release strategy,” Brian Robbins, president and CEO of Paramount Pictures, said. “Across all our 2022 titles, and now with Top Gun: Maverick, our studio has unlocked the value of variable windowing that streaming provides to augment a film’s overall success.”

Paramount did not release a numerical count of streaming views for either Top Gun: Maverick or Sonic the Hedgehog.

Top Gun: Maverick is available for streaming in the United States, as well as in Canada, Australia, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, the United Kingdom, and Latin America. It will be available to stream in South Korea and France beginning in 2023.

The Top Gun sequel first appeared in theaters on May 27 and quickly soared at the box office.

Maverick was the top-grossing film of 2022 and, in September, became the fifth top-grossing movie of all time. The sequel pushed past 2018’s Black Panther, which now stands at No. 6 in the all-time top-grossing films chart, with more than $718 million.
