Mud-bog racer dies in Fluvanna accident

PALMYRA, Va. (AP) — Fluvanna County authorities say a mud-bog racer died when his vehicle overturned and landed in a pond full of swimmers.

The sheriff’s office says the driver was pronounced dead Saturday before he could be airlifted from the event at Haislip Farm, located between Scottsville and Palmyra.

The Charlottesville Daily Progress reports (http://bit.ly/PAIKz0 ) that the driver was extracted from the vehicle after it was removed from the water. His name has still not been released Sunday.

Lt. David R. Wells of the sheriff’s office says three other people received minor injuries in the crash.

Wells described the event as a straight-line drag race through a large mud pit. He said the driver apparently had completed his run and was returning to the staging area when the accident occurred.
