‘My heart breaks’: Potential independent candidate rebukes GOP support for Trump

Following House Speaker Paul Ryan’s endorsement of Donald Trump, potential independent candidate David French said his “heart breaks” for the Republican Party.

“The leaders of the party that ended slavery now endorse a man who bullies women, lies habitually, and incites violence,” French tweeted. “My heart breaks.”

French’s name is among those floated by Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol as potential independent candidates to give the “Never Trump” movement an option in November. But the National Review writer and constitutional lawyer has previously expressed support for Trump himself.

In a January video, French said he would vote for Trump if he won the Republican Party’s nomination. French took his words back in March, and said, “I hadn’t yet seen — or had been unwilling to believe — the full extent of his contempt for the truth.”

Whether French emerges as an independent candidate for the presidency remains to be seen, but he has received high praise from 2012 GOP nominee Mitt Romney, a longtime Trump critic.
