Failed Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton said as the exit poll numbers filtered in on election night in 2016 that she knew the American people were never going to allow her to be president.
“I knew it. I knew this would happen to me.… They were never going to let me be president.,” Amy Chozick quoted Clinton as saying in her new book Chasing Hillary: Ten Years, Two Presidential Campaigns, and One Intact Glass Ceiling, according to the Daily Beast.
The excerpt said Clinton knew she was never going to be able to win some voters over. After Trump was also selected as the Republican nominee, and he was surging in polls, Clinton’s campaign was still attempting to improve her negative favorability ratings, which irked Clinton.
“You know, I am getting pretty tired of hearing about how nobody likes me,” Clinton said as she was continuously walked through the numbers on how half the country disliked her.
“Oh, what’s the point? They’re never going to like me,” Clinton told a friend according to Chozick.
The story outlined a pre-written New York Times story about Clinton’s win said that she had to “withstand more indignities, setbacks, and cynicism” than any male or female in modern politics.
“She developed protective armor that made the real Hillary Clinton an enigma,” the Times article would have read, according to Chozick’s book. “But if she was guarded about her feelings and opinions, she believed it was in careful pursuit of a dream for generations of Americans: the election of the country’s first woman president.”
