Now hear this: New Top Gun: Maverick trailer buzzes the internet

The new Top Gun: Maverick trailer hit the internet on Monday, tantalizing fans of the 1986 original film.

Tom Cruise returns as the seemingly ageless Capt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, who, 34 years after the events of Top Gun, now is a flight instructor at the Navy Fighter Weapons School at Miramar Naval Air Station in San Diego, California.

“Let’s gooooo!!!!” actor Danny Ramirez, who was cast in the film, said on Monday when he tweeted out the trailer.

Fans noted that the new trailer pays more than a few tributes to the original. Included in the 2 minute, 12 second teaser are volleyball scenes, motorcycle rides along the tarmac, and action-packed flying — all of which will be familiar to anyone who has seen the original film.

In addition to Cruise reprising his role, Val Kilmer returns as “Ice Man,” Maverick’s former rival-turned-wingman. Miles Teller appears as Lt. Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, the grown son of Maverick’s former backseater, Goose. Several fans noted the uncanny resemblance Teller shares with Anthony Edwards, who played Goose. Rooster pays an homage to his late father with his signature mustache.

“Miles Teller injected himself with Anthony Edwards’ DNA for 3 years to prepare for this movie,” twitter user Chet Lemmond joked.

New additions to the film include cast members Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, and Ed Harris.

Top Gun: Maverick replaces the Navy’s iconic F-14 Tomcat with the more recent F-18 Super Hornet. Fans with a keen eye noted the appearance of a mysterious stealth jet. While the trailer clearly shows Maverick is now an instructor, it depicted a combat scene, without hinting who the adversary may be.

Moviegoers can learn more when the film hits theaters on June 25, 2020.
