Cornerback The Redskins still need a cornerback who can cover in the slot; Kevin Barnes struggled in this role last season, and Cedric Griffin, whom they signed earlier this offseason, is no lock to help. The cornerback class is fine, not great. Among those to watch: Trumaine Johnson (could be long gone), Chase Minnifield, Casey Hayward, Dwight Bentley and Omar Bolden.

It’s tough to trust that Jammal Brown will be healthy. Nagging injuries have impacted his play his first two seasons here. And Trent Williams is a positive drug test away from a yearlong suspension. So the Redskins need a young tackle to groom. Among the choices: Donald Stephenson, Zebrie Sanders and Mitchell Schwartz.
Safety
Though the Redskins have signed three safeties in the offseason, all come with question marks. They need to develop DeJon Gomes, but they would be wise to bring in another young safety. It’s not a deep class, and they could opt for a cornerback who can move to safety. Antonio Allen, Kelcie McCray and George Iloka are possibilities.
Running back
Even if they re-sign Tim Hightower, the Redskins could select another back. Why? Mike Shanahan likes doing so. He selected 15 in Denver and, so far, two in Washington. Intriguing options: Robert Turbin, Edwin Baker, Cyrus Gray, Bernard Pierce, Vick Ballard and Ronnie Hillman.
Slot receiver/tight end
Neither is a major area of need; both could be addressed as Santana Moss and Chris Cooley are no locks for this season. The receiver class is deep; players such as Joe Adams, Ryan Broyles, A.J. Jenkins and T.Y. Hilton offer mid-round value. At tight end, Deangelo Peterson and Taylor Thompson, a converted defensive end, are among those who should be available in the middle rounds.
