A gunman massacred at least 39 people early Sunday at an Istanbul nightclub as revelers welcomed in the new year.
The killer has not yet been caught, and a massive manhunt is underway. Around 70 people are in hospitals being treated for injuries. Among the dead were at least 15 foreigners.
While it is not clear who is behind the assault, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan blamed terror groups “trying to create chaos” and destabilize the country.
The attack occurred at the Reina nightclub, an upscale venue that attracts many foreigners.
The White House condemned what it called “horrific terrorist attack” and said President Obama has been briefed by national security advisors and asked to be updated on the situation as it develops.
