ATLANTA — Democrats on Saturday voted to strike a resolution from its rules package that would have banned the party from raising corporate money.
Democratic National Committee members held a heated debate on the issue just prior to voting on a new slate of party officials, including a new chairman.
Democrats in favor of striking the ban of corporate money argued that the party needs all the resources it can get to fund opposition to President Trump and win back seats in Congress and state legislatures in 2018.
Opponents said using corporate funds goes against what the party is supposed to stand for.
“We can not afford not to take corporate money,” a DNC member from Utah said, during the debate.
“It wasn’t a lack of money that caused the problem,” countered a DNC member from Colorado, referring to the outcome of the 2016 elections and losses Democrats have suffered over the past eight years.
