Five cyclists killed in Michigan after truck hits group

Five bicyclists were killed and another four injured Tuesday night when a pickup truck ran into the group of cyclists just north of Kalamazoo, Mich., then attempted to flee the scene on foot, according to a local news station.

The nine cyclists were nabbed by a white pickup truck on a rural road in Cooper Township shortly before 7 p.m. local time. The cyclists were part of a group that went on weekly rides.

Police are investigating the cause of the collision and have not stated whether the incident was intentional or an accident.

The group of cyclists was comprised of men and women, but no children, as an earlier report from WZZM had misstated.

Officers described the suspect as a 50-year-old man from the west Michigan area, but have not issued any other information. The man is in police custody pending an investigation.
