RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — The Appomattox River Basin in central Virginia is under a drought warning due to low rainfall and extreme heat.
Drought watches are in effect for the Northern Piedmont and Roanoke River drought evaluation regions.
The most recent U.S. Drought Monitor report shows abnormally dry conditions across about 70 percent of Virginia.
The Virginia Drought Management Task Force says low rainfall and heat continue to affect stream flows, groundwater levels, agriculture and some public water supplies.
The state recommends voluntary water conservation measures when a drought warning is issued. Drought watches are designed to raise public awareness to prepare for a drought event.
