The Maryland National Guard evacuated its Baltimore armory Wednesday after workers found an unexploded mortar round in the century-old building’s basement.

Baltimore’s bomb squad was working with officials from Fort Meade on determining if the round was live, and how to remove it from the Fifth Regiment Armory on 29th Division Street, said Lt. Col. Charles Kohler, spokesman for the Maryland Guard.

The armory, built in 1901, was being renovated Wednesday when workers examining pipes in the basement found the mortar round.

No ordinances are stored at the armory, and it unclear how old the round is. The armory is home to several National Guard units that deploy to war zones overseas, Kohler said.

Fort Meade is helping the National Guard remove the round, Kohler said. The Anne Arundel fort has experience in removing such material, as the Odenton installation is removing unexploded bombs from its property.
