Amy the beagle is dead.
The 2-year-old died after ingesting poison in Howard County last month, and on Wednesday, a Laurel man was charged in connection with her death.
Howard County Police served officers an arrest warrant on Jack Carl Schroeder, 58, of Laurel, charging him with aggravated cruelty to animals, after Amy became sick and died.
Police believe Schroeder intentionally poisoned the dog by leaving out a bowl for the dog filled with food and a green liquid, apparently anti-freeze.
“There was some issue over whether the dog barked too much or not between Schroeder and his neighbors,” said Pfc. Jamie Myers, a Howard County police spokesman.
In early January, police received a report that Schroeder left containers with food remnants, anti-freeze, oil and water near the property line between his home and his neighbor?s home intending for the neighbor?s dog to ingest its contents. She did, and now she?s dead, police said.
Neighbors observed Schroeder acting suspiciously near the property line the night before the dog became sick, police said.
The dog?s owner checked the area and discovered bowls containing the remnants of food and a greenish colored liquid, according to police.
In addition to the animal cruelty count, police also charged Schroeder with destroying property worth over $500.
“This is just tragic,” said Ann Selnick, president of Animal Advocates of Howard County. “It?s really pathetic human beings have to resort to intentionally killing an animal to resolve an issue. Let it be warning to the dangers of anti-freeze this time of year. It smells wonderful to a pet. Let?s not let another animal die because of it.”
Schroeder did not return a phone call seeking comment.
