Dana Carvey unveils impression of Joe Biden

During Tuesday night’s episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, comedian Dana Carvey gave his impression of President Joe Biden.

Carvey, who, over the years, has become famous for his impressions of different presidents, including, most notably, former President George H. W. Bush, said that he has a “couple hooks” for his impression of Biden.

“I do him at the town hall when he’s like the gentle father to the country, and he looks like the alien that came off the spaceship in Close Encounters,” Carvey said.

“Folks, come on, folks, let’s get real,” he said, getting into his rambling impression. “And my mother said, you know, ‘That’s the way the cookie is.'”

Carvey appeared on the show, in part, to promote his new podcast Fantastic.

Earlier this month, journalist Richard Zoglin wrote for the Washington Post that Biden was “impervious to impressionists,” writing that his absence from shows like Saturday Night Live couldn’t be “good for the country.”

“The voice is too bland and devoid of obvious quirks, and beyond the occasional ‘C’mon, man,’ his conversational manner too muted and self-effacing, to give the parodists much to work with,” he argued.

But it appears that Carvey may have cracked the code.

“There’s a lot there if you just don’t worry about the fact that he’s 78,” the comedian said. “He gets a little confused sometimes. That doesn’t mean you’re attacking him personally.”

Carvey also showed his impression of Dr. Anthony Fauci, the head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, explaining impressionists don’t always have to sound like their subjects and that sometimes just a “feeling” is enough.

“Here’s my origin on my Fauci,” he said. “I read about him on the basketball team. He’s 5-foot-4. They said he was a really rough-and-tumble guard.”

“And then, I looked. He’s been the head of the epidemiology or whatever it is for 40 years. He’s got to have sharp elbows. And I thought, underneath that nice guy scientist, he’s kind of a tough guy,” Carvey continued.
