It will soon get a lot tougher for people under 21 to buy a gun in California.
A law signed by Gov. Jerry Brown on Friday raised the age to buy rifles and shotguns from a licensed dealer from 18 to 21 starting in 2019, except for members of law enforcement or the military, or those who have a hunting license. The age to buy a handgun was already 21.
The bill was one of several gun-control measures signed into law by Brown, a Democrat. Others included a new restriction on owning guns for life for people who have have been hospitalized for mental health problems twice in one year. People affected by that law could petition for the return of their guns every five years.
Those convicted of certain misdemeanors for domestic violence will also be barred from owning guns for life under the measures Brown signed into law Friday, following his approval of other gun-related measures earlier in the week.
Brown also vetoed measures related to gun control this week, including one Friday that would have prevented people from buying more than one rifle a month.
