Magazine ranks D.C. third for good eating, good fitness

D.C. is the country’s third best city to eat heartily and keep fit, according to a study released in February’s Cooking Light magazine.

The nation’s capital finished behind first-place Seattle and runner-up Portland in a list that looked at 17 different criteria, including restaurant rankings, the top chefs, the number of farmers markets, the acres of parkland and the eating habits of the residents determined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Baltimore ranked No. 11.

“D.C. is in line with our philosophy to ‘eat smart, be fit and live well,’ ” said Phillip Rhodes, features editor for Cooking Light, the nation’s largest food magazine.

D.C.’s No. 3 spot was determined based on the District’s high marks regarding James Beard-nominated critically acclaimed chefs, its farmers markets, its accessibility to pedestrians and the amount of fruits and vegetables consumed.

Cooking Light will feature the top 11 through 20 cities in January and February, and then each month count down the top 10 cities. A detailed feature about D.C. will appear in the October issue.
