Ex-Terp Baxter guilty of gun crime

Former University of Maryland basketball star Lonny Baxter, 28, of Rockville, pleaded guilty today in U.S. District Court to illegally shipping guns.

Baxter was accused of shipping guns to College Park via Federal Express without notifying the company that the package contained firearms.

As a result of his guilty plea, Baxter will not be permitted to own, possess or use a firearm. Baxter also forfeits his Beretta 9mm pistol and Mossberg 12 gauge shotgun.

He faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine when he is sentenced on Aug. 31.

Baxter previously forfeited the other firearms in connection with a District of Columbia case in which Baxter was sentenced to two months in jail last year for firing a weapon in Washington.
