The moral victory of less than a century

Sometimes there are moral victories. But a moral victory is never a preconceived notion. That’s just simply laying down.

Last week, Chavez High in Texas opted for the “moral victory” in a 32-point loss.

The Lobos got drubbed by nationally ranked Yates High 97-65. But after the game, Chavez celebrated because it kept Yates under 100 points while passing the ball around to waste the clock in the fourth quarter with the Lions’ backups on the court.

Given that Yates was 34-0 last season and scored more than 100 points 26 times shows why Chavez’s coach thought this to be important. You’re a footnote. Congratulations.

This reminds us of 2008, when Loyola (Md.) coach Jimmy Patsos thought keeping Davidson’s Stephen Curry off the board was more important than winning. He double-teamed the nation’s leading scorer the entire game — even when it was out of reach — in a 74-48 loss.

You all now have your notoriety — for acting like idiots.
