President Trump attempted to reconcile a conservative electoral split in the United Kingdom, telling pro-Brexit politician Nigel Farage he should join forces with Prime Minister Boris Johnson in an upcoming election.
Trump said Thursday on Farage’s radio program, “I know that you and him will end up doing something that could be terrific if you and he get together as, you know, an unstoppable force.”
Farage is pushing candidates of the new Brexit Party in the U.K.’s Dec. 12 election, running against Johnson’s incumbent Conservative Party.
In response to Trump’s suggestion, Farage said he would entertain the idea if Johnson would agree to a “clean break” from the European Union. Differences of opinion on a negotiated exit triggered next month’s election.
“If you could persuade him to go for a clean break I would be over the moon, because we — as you say, together we would win,” Farage said.
Trump told Farage he should be concerned about the possibility of Labor Party leader Jeremy Corbyn prevailing in the vote.
“Corbyn would be so bad for your country, he’d be so bad, he’d take you in such a bad way. He’d take you into such bad places,” Trump said. “Boris, he’s a fantastic man, and I think he’s the exact right guy for the times.”
