Taking taxpayers for a ride
WHO: Federal departments and agencies.
WHAT: Washington owns more than 624,000 cars and spent $3.4 billion last year on fuel, maintenance and leases, according to The Associated Press.
HOW: The AP reports that Department of Housing and Urban Development officials can’t explain why fuel consumption and inventory declined but costs are up. Interior Department’s inspector general suggested cutting the fleet, but officials added cars instead. Some VA cars sit barely used. One just disappeared.
