The chairman of the Democratic National Committee called Sen. Tom Cotton a “little maggot-infested man,” prompting backlash from conservatives.
Jaime Harrison had choice words for the Arkansas Republican for opposing Ketanji Brown Jackson’s nomination to the Supreme Court, recalling his two-year opposition to confirming Cassandra Butts as ambassador to the Bahamas during Barack Obama’s presidency.

“When asked why he was holding up her confirmation, he said because he wanted to hurt Barack Obama,” Harrison said on Morning Joe on Wednesday. “It shows you who this little maggot-infested man is. He does not deserve to have that pin. He does not deserve to be in the United States Senate representing the good people of Arkansas.”
The Republican National Committee called the comments “unhinged” and highlighted the clip on social media accounts targeted at its conservative base.

“The smell of Democrat desperation is vile and sort of sad,” a RNC spokeswoman told Axios about the comments. “But it makes sense when their fate is tied to Biden hiking gas prices, sending costs skyrocketing, and unleashing a humanitarian crisis at our southern border.”
Conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt criticized the lack of civility and wondered if Harrison’s sentiments were shared by more prominent members of the Democratic Party.
Ah, civility in public discourse. The DNC Chair of course represents the @POTUS, @VP, @SpeakerPelosi and @chuckschumer –so perhaps they should all be asked if they agree with their party chair? https://t.co/FecAXF67iB

Republican operative Matt Whitlock clapped back at Harrison’s statement, saying he “has the message discipline of an angry toddler” and “terrible political instincts.”
I’ll never understand the selection of @harrisonjaime as DNC chair.
He has the message discipline of an angry toddler, terrible political instincts, and his biggest accomplishment in politics is burning over $100M to lost to Lindsey Graham by 10. https://t.co/JsQFUiazuL

Cotton was blasted for comments he made about Jackson’s record defending Guantanamo Bay detainees, saying she would have defended Nazi war criminals at the Nuremberg trials.
“The last Judge Jackson left the Supreme Court to go to Nuremberg and prosecute the case against the Nazis,” Cotton said Tuesday. “This Judge Jackson might have gone there to defend them.”

He defended his comments Wednesday.
“Judge Jackson voluntarily represented three terrorists in three cases, and she called American soldiers war criminals,” Cotton said. “I have no patience for it.”
Jackson was assigned to defend four men held in Guantanamo Bay with alleged connections to terrorism while she served as a public defender between 2005 and 2007. One of the filings she worked on in their defense said U.S. military operations may have violated the Geneva Conventions. Her defendants were not convicted.
