EPA chief leading U.S. delegation to Dubai

Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Gina McCarthy will lead a U.S. delegation to a meeting in Dubai next week to push the United States’ climate and environment goals.

National Security Council spokesman Ned Price said Wednesday that McCarthy would head the American group heading to the Meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol in Dubai. The meeting will be held from Nov. 1 to Nov. 5.

The Montreal Protocol is an international agreement to protect the ozone layer in the Earth’s atmosphere. It is considered to be one of the most successful international environmental agreements, Price said.

McCarthy will meet with international environmental leaders. Representatives from the White House, State Department, Department of Agriculture and other EPA officials will be joining her on the trip.

“The upcoming meeting will include discussions on a Montreal Protocol amendment to address emissions of hydrofluorocarbons, potent greenhouse gases that are replacing ozone-depleting substances and are rapidly becoming a major contributor to global climate change,” Price said.

Many scientists blame greenhouse gases for driving manmade climate change.

The meeting in Dubai is a benchmark on the road to the United Nations Conference on Climate Change in Paris, which will be held at the end of November through mid-December.
