Why Ferrera backs Hillary: Illegal immigration “is the American Dream”

After saying she wanted to “Netflix and Chill” with Hillary Clinton, actress America Ferrera continues her enthusiastic support for the candidate with her Medium piece on “Why Hillary Clinton Thrills the Hell Out of Me.”

Some people believe “I am voting for Hillary Clinton because I’m a stupid, uninformed, misguided feminist who only knows how to vote with her ignorant vagina,” Ferrera begins her piece.

“I also really like Hillary Clinton,” she goes on to explain. Her piece is a mix of addressing such claims of “voting with her… vagina” while speaking to her experiences and how they come into play with her support.

Towards the piece’s close, Ferrera notes that it’s not so much that Hillary is a woman, but that she has the better record on women’s rights, according to Ferrera. Other women supporting Hillary do so in part because she is a woman, and also criticize Congress because it is mostly run by men.

Ferrera lauds Hillary for how she, after losing the nomination in 2008, “immediately urged her supporters to back him with grace and without reservation.” The comment may or may not be aimed towards Sanders supporters, 25 percent who would abandon Hillary if she were the nominee. Sanders expressed that Hillary needs to do better to win them over, especially young people.

Ferrera does mention Sanders by name, for voting against Ted Kennedy’s 2007 immigration reform bill. She also notes the efforts of “undocumented people in this country,” while criticizing how “our inadequate immigration system has been turned into a hyper-politicized topic.”

On undocumented persons, Ferrera notes that “that hope is not inherently illegal or criminal — it is called the American Dream.”

In addition to dismissing the issues of illegal immigration, Ferrera ties in Hillary’s views with Hispanics:

Our families didn’t come to this country to solve the immigration reform problem: they came to thrive. They came to get educated, to start businesses and to contribute. From access to healthcare and higher education, to reproductive rights and support for small business owners- Hillary has made real and steady progress on these issues which greatly impact our communities.

Ferrera is a supporter Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion provider. But, Hispanics are shown to be pro-life on abortion.

Ferrera claims she is”beyond ready for a president who is capable of working with both Republicans and Democrats to find common ground.” Her point echoes Hillary’s own sentiments on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, but fails to account for Hillary’s criticism of Republicans in the past.

At the piece’s end, Ferrera shares that her support for Hillary is about “the potential” they see in each other rather than “because I can’t manage to wrangle my vagina’s political agenda.”
