You know it’s bad when Alex Trebek, a guy with a reputation for being resolutely positive, is taking unprompted shots at your baseball team.
The “Jeopardy!” host was in town Wednesday to emcee the finals of the National Geographic Bee at National Geographic headquarters, and no sooner was he introduced than he cut down our hometown nine.
“It’s springtime in Washington, and that can mean only one thing,” he said. “The Washington Nationals are trying to dig themselves out of the cellar, and are trying to do it before the All-Star break.”
Alex also flirted with some political incorrectness. After surveying the names of the other contestants, who were primarily of Indian and East Asian ancestry, he came to contestant Nicholas Farnsworth from Arizona. “With a name like Nicholas Farnsworth, I don’t know how he made it to the finals, but he did,” Trebek remarked to the crowd.
